PROJECT

Demonstration Project for the Introduction of Renewable Energy on Iwo Jima and Minami Tori Jima

The Okinawa Electric Power Company, Incorporated (President: Hiroyuki Motonaga) and its subsidiary, Seed Okinawa LLC (CEO: Kiyoto Shimabukuro) have been commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment to conduct a demonstration project to introduce renewable energy on Iwo Jima and Minami Tori Jima.

Remote islands, which are supplied with electricity by a single grid, are subject to harsh natural conditions, such as typhoons and salt damage.  Since it is not easy to supply goods in the event of a severe typhoon, it is particularly important to ensure the stable supply of electricity so that necessary facilities can operate.

In this demonstration project, we construct the energy system consisting of solar power generation, grid stabilizers (storage batteries), controllable loads (EVs, energy-saving equipment, etc.) and integrated control of these devices, and efficiently operate them to demonstrate how to strengthen resilience and reduce CO2 emissions on the two islands.

By deploying the results obtained through this demonstration project, the project aims to accelerate the development of reusable, energy-saving, and energy storage systems on remote islands that are not connected to the mainland power grid. And it is expected that efforts to become carbon neutral by 2050 in the country will be further promoted.

By leveraging its strengths, including the experience it has accumulated through the installation of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power generation on small-scale power grids on remote islands in Okinawa prefecture, and its knowledge of grid stabilization technologies, Okinawa Electric Power Company Group will expand its business outside the region, particularly in island areas, and achieve increased profits.  It will also contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society and a sustainable society.
